Poetry

March is Poetry month in Writer's Workshop!
We began by reading many different types of poetry and creating this anchor chart of what we noticed most poetry has...

Next, we needed to understand that Poets often look at things differently- with Poet's Eyes.
Check out this chart to see what we found...

Then, we created some poetry as a class.
We wanted to describe what recess meant to us and how it made us feel.

Now see what some students created independently...

Plants!!!!

We have been learning all about plants!  We have been studying a plant's needs, parts, and observing many different experiments.
This week we planted a few different seeds in soil and we are patiently waiting for them to sprout!
Check it out...

Here we learned the importance of a plant's stem...
to support the plant and bring water to the leaves and flowers.

Here we are observing what happens when we cut off the top and bottom of a carrot...
the top will grow back!

Sight words and Special Sounds

Please continue to practice ALL of the sight words we have learned this year!  It is important that your child not only be able to read them but also write them.  Call out the sight word to your child but do not show them the word.  Have them write the sight word as quickly and accurately as they can.
Our new sight words since winter break:

was, she, he, will, no, not, that, they, did, get

We have also learned about some special sounds... digraphs!  When these letters are put together they create a new sound.

SH, TH, CH, WH, PH

We have learned some L and R blend sounds...
SL, BL, PL, GL, FL, CL, PR, TR, DR, BR

Please practice reading these, stretching (sounding) out words and spelling words with these when writing.

Thank you for helping your child succeed!

Heating

In science this week we have learned a lot about heating, sources of heat, and how it changes things.  Here are some pictures from an experiment we did with using our hand as a heat source with ice.
Here we experimented with a chocolate chip and M&Ms to see which melts faster in our mouth and why.  Everyone agreed the chocolate chip melted faster!
We also did an experiment to see how heat can change things.  We watched popcorn kernels being made into popcorn!

Labeling

In Writer's Workshop we learned how LABELS can make our writing more interesting by adding details!  We also practiced all week long stretching out or sounding out our words when we wrote labels.

Here is where we labeled our friend Bradley!  He had a lot of fun :)

When your child writes at home, please encourage them to write all of the letter sounds they hear.  As they get more confident in their letter ID and letter sound recognition they are really beginning to enjoy stretching out words . Keep up the great practice at home!

Early Numbers 0, 1, 2

We have been learning all about early numbers 0, 1, and 2 this week.  Check out all the ways we can represent this number...
Talk to your child about the different ways to make these numbers.  Also, practice counting to and past these numbers, and practice writing these numbers. We will be learning about numbers 3, 4, and 5 next week.

Patterns

We began learning about patterns last week.  We started with AB patterns (ex: green, red, green, red, green, red...).  This week we focused on ABC patterns (ex: dog, lion, flower, dog, lion, flower...).  See the fun ways we practiced our ABC patterns below with fall leaves and today with fruit loop necklaces!  Try having your child make patterns at home using household items.

Five Senses

Here is our 5 senses guy!  We have been working on learning about our 5 senses (sight, hearing, tasting, smelling, and touching) all week long.  Ask your child about the fun experiments we have done using our 5 senses.

Sight Words

Each week, I will add the sight words we are currently working on in class (in red).  Please practice these sight words at home each night.  Once we have added the sight words to our word wall (each Friday), they will change to black font below.  This means we should have them mastered.  However, we will continue to practice them each and every day.  I highly suggest that you use the flash cards provided from parent information night to practice each night.
Thank you for helping your child succeed!
